Fun fact: For many years I served on our local Canada Day Committee. I joined after spending a summer as a youth exchange student - an experience that opened my eyes to the wonders of the world while also giving me perspective about how lucky I am to be Canadian. I started to see that our open spaces in this country are not just geographical. We have the space to dream, to innovate, and to be anything we want to be!
That pride in my country made me feel compelled to give back. It was a natural choice to join the Canada Day Committee and pour my heart and soul into encouraging others to celebrate our country. I was part of a movement to recognize not only Canada Day, but also National Indigenous Peoples Day, Saint Jean Baptiste Day, and Canadian Multiculturalism Day. So many opportunities to connect, learn, share, and become friends as well as citizens!
The sweatshirt I’m wearing in this picture was from those days. I found it in the back of my closet last week and it felt like the right time to pull it out and wear it again!
No country is perfect, but I appreciate that we keep trying in Canada. While our world is experiencing a lot of turmoil and questioning right now, my hope is that as Canadians, we continue to believe in the spaces we have for dreaming, innovating, and creating our own paths forward. I hope we see the day when all citizens around the world can believe in the same for themselves.
